About the Film Makers

Kristal Parke

Lifes a Mother Kristal

Kristal Parke is a Canadian filmmaker, producer, and podcaster whose work explores identity, belonging, and the evolving narratives of adoption. A transracial adoptee, she brings a deeply personal lens to her storytelling—centering voices often left unheard while inviting more honest, expansive conversations. Her multi-award-winning documentary Because She’s Adopted has received international recognition, including Best Canadian Documentary at the 2024 Vancouver International Movie Awards, and has been screened at film festivals throughout the United States. She is also the host of Because She’s Adopted Podcast and co-host of ADOPTION POP!. Life’s a Mother marks her directorial debut.

Chelsea Jade McEvoy

Lifes A Mother Chelsea Headshot

Chelsea Jade McEvoy is an Anishinaabe writer, filmmaker, and editor based in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, whose work explores identity, inclusion, and community. A graduate of the Film Production Program at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, she began her career as a training assistant director before forging her own path as a storyteller. Her award-winning films, including Wheel Love, Because She’s Adopted, and Re-Inventing the Wheel, examine the human condition through the lens of lived experience. Influenced by her connection to the disability community, her work challenges ableist stereotypes and amplifies underrepresented voices. She is the editor of Life’s a Mother.
